ONE WRONG STEP AND HE’S DEAD! 💥 The most heart-stopping sniper moment in Western history.”

Origin and Development

The story originated in the 1970s as a movie screenplay titled The Streets of Laredo, written by Larry McMurtry and intended for John Wayne (as Woodrow Call), James Stewart (as Augustus “Gus” McCrae), and Henry Fonda (as Jake Spoon). When the film was abandoned, McMurtry expanded the script into a novel.

Published in 1985, Lonesome Dove became a massive literary success, spending 20 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list and winning the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Executive producer Suzanne de Passe acquired the screen rights before publication, leading to its television adaptation.

Plot and Real-Life Inspirations

The saga follows two retired Texas Rangers—the stoic, duty-bound Woodrow F. Call (Tommy Lee Jones) and the fun-loving, philosophical Augustus “Gus” McCrae (Robert Duvall)—who run the Hat Creek Cattle Company in the small border town of Lonesome Dove, Texas. Restless with quiet life, they embark on a perilous 2,500-mile cattle drive to Montana to establish one of the state’s first ranches.

  • Historical Basis: McMurtry drew heavy inspiration from real 19th-century frontier figures. Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae were loosely modeled on real-life Texas cattle barons Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving.

  • Demystifying the West: Rather than romanticizing the frontier, McMurtry aimed to depict the harsh realities, physical hardships, and sudden dangers faced by cowboys on the trail.

Casting and Production

While original film ideas favored Golden Age Hollywood stars, the miniseries cast brought an unmatched, lived-in authenticity:

  • Robert Duvall played Augustus McCrae—a role Duvall has frequently called his personal favorite of his career.

  • Tommy Lee Jones portrayed Captain Woodrow F. Call, delivering a quiet, unyielding performance that complemented Duvall’s charismatic screen presence.

  • Supporting Cast: The series featured an ensemble cast including Anjelica Huston (Clara Allen), Danny Glover (Joshua Deets), Diane Lane (Lorena Wood), Robert Urich (Jake Spoon), and Ricky Schroder (Newt Dobbs).

Filmed on location across Texas and New Mexico, the production emphasized historical accuracy in costuming, saddlery, weaponry, and set design to reflect the authentic 1870s frontier.

Reception and Cultural Legacy

  • Critical and Commercial Smash: Lonesome Dove attracted over 26 million viewers per episode during its initial February 1989 broadcast—an extraordinary rating for a Western in the late 1980s.

  • Accolades: The miniseries earned 18 Emmy Award nominations, winning seven (including Outstanding Directing for Simon Wincer and Outstanding Music Composition for Basil Poledouris’s iconic score), alongside two Golden Globe Awards and a Peabody Award.

  • Genre Legacy: Lonesome Dove proved that complex, character-driven Westerns could still capture mass public interest, paving the way for 1990s Western revivals like Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven.

Maybe they give up.

We’re trying to get lucky.

Why we didn’t say anything? Rick had the wolf down there. Piece of luck we’re having. All right. Run into this little bunch of fighters.

Do you reckon we can hold him off till the captain comes looking for us? Well, he won’t miss us for a week. I don’t fancy squatting here in the dirt that long. You’re going to have to go for.

Help once you get dark, do you? Go for help? We might catch me then. We’ll probably start by cutting your shooked a little bit. Probably never heard the mansion before. You too. It’s going to.

Be short. You’re going to try sneaking up on us in the dark. You take a chance at the deal. Couple of sharpshooters like us. Ain’t no sharpshooter. I usually miss if I ain’t got time to take.

Care of the lane. I die. But it’s depressing to talk to you. B.
