Sophie Cunningham Reacts to Caitlin Clark’s Role at the WNBA All-Star Game
Following the WNBA All-Star break, the Indiana Fever returned to action against the New York Liberty. Unfortunately for the Fever, the outcome mirrored their last game before the break, as they suffered another loss to the Liberty, falling 98-84.
Prior to the game, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham shared her thoughts on teammate Caitlin Clark’s involvement during the All-Star weekend. Clark, who was selected as an All-Star, was unable to play due to a groin injury. Despite being sidelined, she served as an assistant coach and vocal leader on the sidelines, supporting her team from the bench during the event.
Cunningham praised Clark’s engagement in her off-court role, especially her involvement in play drawing. “I think the play drawing up was 10 out of 10,” Cunningham said with a smile, commending Clark’s contributions from the bench.
However, Cunningham also took a lighthearted jab at Clark’s reactions on the sideline during the game. “The reactions afterwards was a negative 100 out of 10,” she joked. “She needs to work on her negative reactions but, no, I’m just proud of her for being in it. Having a good attitude toward everything—she’s going through a lot right now.”
Cunningham’s remarks reflected both support and camaraderie, acknowledging Clark’s challenges while emphasizing her importance to the team even when not on the court.
This is Sophie Cunningham’s first season with the Indiana Fever after spending her previous years with the Phoenix Mercury. Since joining Indiana, she has averaged 6.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game. In the game against the Liberty, she finished with a solid 12 points and four rebounds.
Caitlin Clark did not play in the game, marking her second consecutive absence due to injury. She has now missed 12 games this season as she continues to recover from a recurring groin issue. Despite her absence, Clark has remained an active presence with the team and continues to be a central figure both on and off the court.
With the second half of the WNBA season underway, the Fever are hoping to bounce back and find more consistency, especially as they await the return of their star rookie.
