“ONLY A WICKED SOUL WILL NOT WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY”: Dolly Parton Steps In After Heartbreaking Photo of 3-Year-Old Ukrainian Orphan Breaks the Internet

By Olivia Jameson | July 2025

It’s the photo that shattered hearts across the globe.

A 3-year-old Ukrainian boy standing alone between two gravestones, holding a small birthday cake topped with fresh fruit and the number 3. His tiny hands trembled. His eyes glistened with unspoken pain. The headstones behind him bore the faces of two soldiers — his mother and father, both killed in the ongoing war.

No gifts. No hugs.
Just silence, sorrow, and the cold wind of grief.

The world wept. And one woman — Dolly Parton — acted.

Dolly’s Tears

When country music icon and philanthropist Dolly Parton saw the image while scrolling late at night, she said she “froze in her tracks.”

“I just sat there and cried,” Dolly said in a personal video posted to her foundation page. “No child should ever have to spend their birthday at a cemetery.”

“Only a wicked soul will not wish him a happy birthday,” she added softly, her voice trembling. “And I thought, if I can’t give him his parents back, maybe I can give him a future.”

A Promise to 18

Within just 48 hours, Dolly’s Dollywood Foundation reached out to humanitarian partners across Ukraine and Poland. Once the boy — known only by his first name Maksym — was located, Dolly made a life-changing commitment:

She would sponsor 100% of his educational and living expenses until he turns 18 years old.

That includes:

  • Tuition for private schooling
  • Housing and caregivers
  • Clothing, medical care, therapy
  • College or vocational scholarships when he comes of age

“I want him to grow up knowing he is deeply loved — by strangers, by fans, and yes, by me too,” Dolly said.

“A Child of the World”

Dolly has also commissioned a lullaby to be written for Maksym — titled “One More Candle”, inspired by his solitary birthday moment. The song will debut during her annual Christmas charity concert this December, with proceeds going to war orphans across Europe.

The star, who has long used her wealth to support children’s literacy and welfare, says Maksym has become a “symbol of all innocent lives caught in conflict.”

“He is a child of the world now,” she told People magazine. “And we’re going to raise him right.”

A Brighter Birthday Ahead

A new photo surfaced just yesterday — Maksym, smiling shyly, holding a stuffed animal and a birthday card with Dolly’s handwritten message:

“Happy Birthday, darling. From your fairy godmother — Dolly 💖”

He is now safely residing in Poland under the care of a foster mother arranged through Dolly’s foundation. Plans are in motion for him to visit Tennessee in the future — and yes, he’s already been gifted his first tiny cowboy boots.

The Internet Responds

Fans from around the world have flooded social media with birthday wishes for Maksym using the hashtag:
#HappyBirthdayMaksym

“Only a wicked soul will not wish him a happy birthday — and the world has spoken,” one comment read.

“Dolly Parton once again proves that angels walk among us.”

In a world filled with sorrow, Dolly Parton gave one boy a reason to smile again — not just for his third birthday, but for every birthday to come.

She gave him hope. She gave him safety.
And most importantly — she gave him a future.
