Cowboys 2025 Training Camp Position Preview: Dak Prescott and the Quarterbacks
The quarterback position for the Dallas Cowboys is arguably one of the most scrutinized roles in all of professional sports. As the face of America’s Team, every snap, every throw, and every decision is under the microscope — and Dak Prescott knows that pressure better than anyone.
As training camp kicks off in Oxnard, all eyes are on Prescott as he enters his 10th season leading the Cowboys. But while he remains the undisputed starter, the importance of depth behind him can’t be overstated — especially considering his injury history.
Dak Prescott: The Leader, the Veteran, the Star
Dak Prescott enters the 2025 season with a chip on his shoulder and a mission to deliver where it counts most: the postseason. Coming off a hamstring injury that sidelined him late in 2024, Prescott is reportedly healthy and moving with confidence. During media interviews, he’s expressed that the locker room is all-in on chasing a Super Bowl — going so far as to deliver a two-word message to anyone who doesn’t believe: “Get out.”
Prescott has put together an impressive resume with multiple Pro Bowl appearances, a 13-3 rookie season, and several division titles. But critics continue to point to his struggles in the playoffs. With a new offensive system and the addition of George Pickens alongside CeeDee Lamb, Prescott could be poised for his best season yet — if he can stay on the field.
The Backup Plan: Joe Milton III
With the departure of longtime backup Cooper Rush, the Cowboys turned to Joe Milton III, who was acquired via trade from the New England Patriots. Milton is a physical specimen, known for his cannon of an arm and top-tier athleticism. While still raw in terms of NFL experience, Milton is viewed as a high-upside project who could flourish under the mentorship of Prescott.
He’s already drawing praise in camp for his velocity and poise, and Dallas is hopeful he’ll prove to be an upgrade over Rush, who was more of a game manager than a playmaker. If pressed into action, Milton’s physical tools give the Cowboys a fighting chance.
QB3: Will Grier
Will Grier returns as the third quarterback on the depth chart, likely destined for a practice squad or emergency role. Grier has bounced around the league since entering as a third-round pick in 2019, but the coaching staff values his familiarity with the offense and steady presence in the quarterback room.
While Grier may not be in line for significant playing time, his role in preparing the team and serving as an extra set of eyes on the sideline shouldn’t be overlooked.
The Big Picture
With Prescott leading the way, Joe Milton III offering upside as the backup, and Will Grier rounding out the depth chart, the Cowboys feel solid — if not spectacular — at quarterback heading into 2025. But given Prescott’s injury history (he missed time in 2020, 2022, and 2024), the importance of having a reliable No. 2 cannot be overstated.
The Cowboys’ success this season will hinge heavily on Prescott’s health and leadership. If he can stay upright and continue to evolve in Brian Schottenheimer’s offense, there’s every reason to believe this group could help push Dallas deeper into the postseason than fans have seen in decades.
With training camp underway and the season looming, this quarterback room will be one of the most closely watched in the NFL. And as always in Dallas — everything starts and ends with No. 4.
