Caitlin Clark Reacts to Lexie Hull’s Fiancé’s Surprise Appearance During All-Star Weekend
It was a lively and memorable All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis — not just for the fans, but for Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever teammates. Despite being sidelined from both the 3-Point Contest and the All-Star Game due to a groin injury earlier in the week, Clark remained involved in the festivities, representing her team off the court.
One of the highlights came from her teammate Lexie Hull, who stepped in as Clark’s replacement in the 3-Point Contest. Although Hull was eliminated in the first round, it was still a notable opportunity for the 25-year-old guard to take the spotlight. The contest was ultimately won by New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, who delivered a stellar shooting performance.
With All-Star weekend behind them, the Indiana Fever are shifting their focus back to the regular season. The team is set to face the defending champion New York Liberty on Tuesday, but Clark will not play in that matchup due to the same injury. That means more responsibility could fall on Hull and other Fever guards to help carry the offensive load.
However, Lexie Hull might have a little extra motivation for this next game — and it comes from off the court.
A Surprise Appearance: Lexie Hull’s Fiancé Joins the Team Trip
Ahead of the road trip to New York, the Fever shared photos on social media of the team preparing to depart. Among the pictures, fans noticed a surprising guest: Hull’s fiancé, Will Matthiessen, was seen boarding the team’s chartered flight.
Matthiessen, a former Stanford baseball player who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2019, isn’t typically part of team travel — which made his appearance unexpected. It’s uncommon for WNBA players to bring their significant others on the road, particularly for official team trips, which sparked interest online.
Caitlin Clark, though, fully embraced the moment. Reacting on Instagram, she tagged Matthiessen and wrote, “@willmatthiessen love the feature.”
Clark and Hull have developed a strong friendship as teammates in Indiana, and it’s clear that Clark supports Hull’s relationship and upcoming marriage.
A Growing Bond on and off the Court
Hull and Matthiessen, both Stanford alumni, announced their engagement on social media back in April. Given Clark’s close relationship with Hull, it’s likely she’s spent time with the couple and gotten to know Matthiessen personally.
If Matthiessen is indeed traveling with the team to New York, the three could have more time to connect during the two-hour flight. While it’s not confirmed whether he’ll be with the team throughout the trip, his inclusion in the team’s pre-flight post suggests a warm, family-like atmosphere within the Fever organization.
Looking Ahead
As Caitlin Clark continues to recover, the Indiana Fever will need contributions from across the roster — including Hull, who could play a key role in the backcourt during Clark’s absence. With the Liberty up next, Hull’s confidence, support system, and bond with teammates will be crucial.
And with her fiancé by her side and the support of teammates like Clark, Lexie Hull appears ready for the challenge — on and off the court.
