Dak Prescott Says There’s Only One Way Micah Parsons’ Contract Standoff Will End

As the Dallas Cowboys enter training camp, one major storyline continues to loom: the unresolved contract situation surrounding star linebacker Micah Parsons. After four impressive seasons, Parsons is eligible for a new deal—and he wants to get paid like one of the best defensive players in the league. However, instead of closing the deal swiftly, team owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ front office have dragged negotiations into the public spotlight.

Despite the hold-up, Parsons has handled the situation professionally. Unlike other stars in similar positions who have held out (like Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson), Parsons has reported to camp. He’s participated in team activities, avoided harsh public comments, and remained committed to the team culture—even as his future remains uncertain.

Quarterback Dak Prescott addressed the situation, voicing support for Parsons and predicting how things will likely play out.

“I don’t know if there’s a right way to go about it,” Prescott told ESPN’s Todd Archer. “But I’ll say this: I think he deserves to get paid. I think he will get paid. And based on how these things usually go around here, I believe it’s only a matter of time.”

Prescott has been through this process before. Just last year, he signed a four-year, $240 million extension after his own long-running contract saga with the team. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also reached a deal—$136 million over four years—after skipping the start of training camp to pressure the team.

Prescott said these contract dramas have become routine for the Cowboys, naming stars like Zack Martin, Lamb, and now Parsons as players who have all had to navigate lengthy negotiations.

“It’s something we deal with every year,” Prescott explained. “Do I wish it were easier for all of us? Of course. But Micah’s handling it like a pro. He’s here, he’s engaging with the team, joining us at dinners, showing leadership. He’s not just showing up for appearances—he genuinely wants to be out there.”

Prescott added that he’s relieved Parsons isn’t risking injury while his contract remains unsettled. “Honestly, I’m glad he’s not pushing himself too hard right now. That’s the business side of it—you’ve got to protect yourself.”

Parsons is entering the final year of his rookie deal this fall. Despite being under contract, his performance—combined with the current market for elite defenders—justifies a significant pay raise. Prescott and others on the team believe it’s just a matter of time before Parsons gets what he’s earned.

If recent history is any indication, the Cowboys will eventually pay their stars. It might take time, but the deals typically get done. And Prescott is confident Parsons will be the next to cash in.
