Country music is full of tall tales, but this might just be the most hair-raising story yet! In a recently resurfaced interview, Willie Nelson spilled the beans on a legendary—and little-known—competition with his longtime friend and fellow outlaw, Waylon Jennings.

“Waylon and I once made a bet: who could grow their beard the longest without trimming,” Willie revealed, laughing. “We were both so stubborn, but I finally cracked. He won fair and square—and I had to cook dinner for the entire Jennings family!”

The wager, which started as a friendly backstage joke during a tour in the late ’70s, quickly escalated into a months-long standoff. Band members and crew reportedly kept a close eye, with Jessi Colter even joking that the only way to break the tie was to “measure the beards before breakfast.”

In the end, it was Willie who broke first, giving in to a trim before a major TV appearance.
